Terrazzo Flooring

Terrazzo is a man-made stone consisting of natural stone pieces set in a cement or epoxy medium and either poured on location or precast as tiles. Marble pieces used in the terrazzo mix enable polishing to a high shine and often these floors will have decorative patterns and features, which can be enhanced dramatically. Due to its durability, Terrazzo is a very popular flooring choice in high traffic environments such as supermarkets, airports, and shopping centres.

Restoring Terrazzo floors is a multi-stage process that can produce stunning results. The process involves stripping the old finish off the floor surface; VCS Floor Care achieve this by using our specialised floor stripping machines and floor stripping solution, then resealing with an appropriate sealer to produce a glass-like appearance.

Natural stone impregnators can be used to close the porosity of Terrazzo, Marble, Travertine, Granite, Slate, Sandstone, Limestone and other natural stone. By penetrating deep into the surface of the stone, impregnators close off small pores and larger pores are made smaller, stopping liquid molecules being absorbed into the stone. This treatment prevents staining and dirt formation, but allows the stone to ‘breathe’. To test the porosity of your floor, pour a tablespoon of water onto the floor and leave for 5-10 minutes. If the water has been absorbed into the stone your floor is porous and susceptible to staining.

Stone restoration is a very time-consuming process.

There are NO shortcuts! If one step of the process is rushed, any scratches and faults that were not removed will remain in the floor and only become enhanced as you progress through the polishing steps. Only well-trained and experienced operators should carry out stone restoration. Regardless of the type of restoration, all stone floors will become dull and worn when exposed to traffic. It is therefore very important a Floor Maintenance Program is put in place to make sure your beautiful Terrazzo floor fulfils its potential.
